Copperfield Oregon Prohibition On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1914, Governor Oswald West sent his secretary Miss Fern Hobbs to the wide-open mining town of Copperfield with orders to close down the saloons.

Arriving with a small "force" of national guardsmen, the diminutive woman found the entire town lined up to greet her, the streets hung with bunting and the bars bedecked with ribbons and flowers.

Undaunted, she carried out the Governor's orders in time to catch the next train back to the Capitol.
