On this day in 1847 Mrs. N.M. Thornton announced the opening of a female school at Oregon City. The announcement appeared in the Oregon Spectator and described the following courses: "English education will be taught in this school, together with plain and fancy needlework, drawing and painting in mezzotinto and water colors."
