On this day in 1903, a badly wounded sperm whale drifted into the mouth of the Columbia River and was beached by the surf near Astoria. The whale which was exposed at low tide measured 54 feet in length and weighed an estimated 75 tons. There was no explanation for its presence as sperm whales were rarely seen in these latitudes. The unfortunate creature died a few days later.
