Cape Sebastian on southern Oregon's coast was named on this day in 1603 when Sebastian Vizcaino, sailing north from Mexico on an exploring expedition, sighted a towering white bluff near a point he determined to the 42nd Parallel. He named the precipice not after himself but in honor of the Saint that day, San Sebastian. The 700' high cape marked the terminus of his northward voyage.
