On this day in 1851 the City of Portland was incorporated, making it the second incorporated community, after Oregon City, in the Oregon Territory. A toss of a coin between Asa Lovejoy from Boston and Francis Pettygrove of Portland, Maine later in the year determined the city's name. But, because of the clusters of tree stumps between log cabins there, travelers passing through continued to call the community "Stumptown".
