January 29, 1890, was another frigid day as the Portland & Vancouver Railroad Company sent their ferry, which had been docked at Johnson's Wharf since the freeze up, to the Columbia to try and break the ice up to Vancouver. Because of heavy prevailing winds, little had been done to break up the 4-inch ice, making it impossible to cross over to Vancouver.
