On this day in 1844, Oregon City became the first incorporated city in the Oregon Territory and west of the Rockies. Oregon City was also the first seat of American government on the Pacific Coast. For this reason, the City of San Francisco filed its plat map here on February 1, 1850. The map still hangs in the county clerk's office at the Clackamas County Courthouse and is the only one known to exist.
