On this day in 1846 Oregon's first newspaper The Oregon Spectator, which was also the first newspaper on the Pacific Coast, was pulled from the sticky type of a Washington hand press. Printing offices were set up in Oregon City by a group of Willamette Valley settlers organized as the Oregon Printing Association. For nearly a decade that the Spectator was published, the fortnightly newspaper markedly influenced the political and cultural climate of the day.
