On this day in 1857, a meeting was held in the Linn County Courthouse in Albany where the Free State Republican Party was formally organized. After electing W.T. Matlock as president and Leander Homes as secretary of the convention, the party passed a platform calling for Oregon's admission as a 'free state' and the immediate construction of a transcontinental railroad.
