Pro-Slavery Democrats On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1859 Oregon finally gained statehood as the result of Congressional approval and by Presidential proclaimation.

The path to becoming the nation's 33rd state was a long and bitter one, however. The question of slavery in Oregon was a heated political issue for many months prior to the 1857 convention that drew up the state constitution. Pro-slavery Democrats were eventually voted down and Oregon went on to be admitted as a free state.
