On this day in 1859 Oregon finally gained statehood as the result of Congressional approval and by Presidential proclaimation. The path to becoming the nation's 33rd state was a long and bitter one, however. The question of slavery in Oregon was a heated political issue for many months prior to the 1857 convention that drew up the state constitution. Pro-slavery Democrats were eventually voted down and Oregon went on to be admitted as a free state.
