On this day in 1849 General Joseph Lane of Indiana arrived at Oregon City. Lane had been appointed First Territorial Governor of the Oregon Territory on the previous August 17th by President James Polk. Lane's first proclamation was the establishment of a new government in Oregon. General Lane, a one-time Indiana Senator and a soldier under General Scott in the Mexican War, was highly regarded in the states.
