On this day in 1857 the James Clinton was the first steamboat to cruise up the Willamette River to Eugene. The trip from Corvallis took three days. This initial voyage of the James Clinton was of great importance to the Willamette Valley as it resulted in the formation of the People's Transportation Company which increased the transport of goods from upper Willamette Valley towns. As business increased, more steamers were added to the line.
