On this day in 1882 U.S. District Judge for Oregon and Founder of the Multnomah Public Library, Matthew P. Deady notes in his diary that today was his son's birthday. "He got up this morning by daylight and staid away until breakfast to avoid being 'spanked' 13 times...Sunday was Mrs. Deady's 47th birthday, and it passed without notice."
