On this day in 1882, Oregon was finally linked by wire to the Atlantic Coast with the completion of the telegraph system between Portland and California. To commemorate this historic occasion, a message was sent by the Mayor of Portland, Oregon to the Mayor of Portland, Maine: "Portland of the Pacific to Portland of the Atlantic--the younger to the older sister--one in name. May they ever be united in the preservation of our common country and its liberties."
