On this day in 1867 nationally known Silverton, Oregon cartoonist Homer C. Davenport was born in the Waldo Hills east of Salem. Homer began his cartooning career with the Morning Oregonian in 1890. After a brief stint with the San Francisco Examiner, he went back east where he drew for the New York Journal. It was Homer's political caricatures along with Thomas Nast's stinging cartoons that led to an unsuccessful attempt in 1897 to pass an "anti-cartoon" law in New York.
