On this day in 1889, Portland inventor Elijah Morton unveiled his "alleged flying machine" to the press. The inventor spent seven years perfecting his model. In Morton's own words, "I have drawn my ideas from flight of birds, from the flying of a kite, from the first and tenth chapters of the Book of Ezekiel and from all other sources throwing light on the subject of aerial navigation."
