On this day in 1864 the completion of the telegraph in Portland was celebrated with a big parade. Citizens contributed $225 to the "Telegraph Celebration Fund." Expenses, however, amounted to only $175, so the committee arranging the event handed the unexpected balance of $50 over, to be forwarded to the military commission.
