champoeg artifact On This Day In Oregon

"Mr. Whitworth informs us, says the Unionist, that two parts of a skeleton of the extinct class of animals that once ranged over the continent of America, known to naturalists as Mastodon, were found last week at or near Champoeg, on the Wallamet River. One specimen was a part of the scapula, or shoulder blade, and the other one was one of the molar teeth."
