brig Juno On This Day In Oregon

As Lewis and Clark were preparing their return to the east coast on March 23rd, the Boston brig Juno, recently purchased by the Russians, was trying to enter the Columbia River with the Russian Imperial Inspector of Alaska aboard on this day in 1806.

"We will found a settlement", he said, "and drive those Bostonians from the trade forever...then in the course of ten years we should be strong enough to make use of any favorable turn in European politics to include the coast in the Russian possessions."

He sighted the Columbia River, but the current drove him back. After several more unsuccessful attempts to sail into the mouth of the river, he gave up.
