On this morning in 1859 The Brother Johnathon, a pioneer steamboat operating between Portland and San Francisco, arrived in Portland with the first news of Oregon's admission to the Union. The bill had been passed by both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, needing only President Buchanon's signature.
