On this day in 1879 The Honorable John Whiteaker, Representative of Oregon to Congress, arrived in Washington, DC. Leaving Oakland at noon, March 12 on a special train provided by the Democratic Central Committee, Representative Whiteaker reached the Capitol at 10 A.M. Upon arrival, his voted assured the election of a Democratic Party Speaker to the House of Representatives. Thus ended a spectacular trip by rail across the continent that averaged the extraordinary speed of 40 MPH over long stretches.
