John Whiteaker On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1879 The Honorable John Whiteaker, Representative of Oregon to Congress, arrived in Washington, DC.

Leaving Oakland at noon, March 12 on a special train provided by the Democratic Central Committee, Representative Whiteaker reached the Capitol at 10 A.M. Upon arrival, his voted assured the election of a Democratic Party Speaker to the House of Representatives.

Thus ended a spectacular trip by rail across the continent that averaged the extraordinary speed of 40 MPH over long stretches.
