The American elk, or "wapati" as American natives called it, was at one time the widest ranging hoofed animal in North America. But no elk remained in Oregon when the Oregon Game and Fish Commission established an elk refuge in Wallowa County in 1911. On this day in 1912, fifteen elk arrived at the reserve from Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Several of the animals died during the difficult journey over Teton Pass, but the transplanted elk have since multiplied and number several thousand.
