On this day in 1874, saloons in Portland were invaded by women crusaders as the Women's Temperance Prayer League began its assault with hymn and prayer on the city's whiskey mills. Services were held at Tom Shartle's and at the evening call without any untoward incident. As the ladies marched from place to place, a crowd of men, boys and dogs gathered to follow them.
