On this day in 1806, Mt. Jefferson was first sighted by Lewis and Clark from a point near the mouth of the Willamette River. They named the peak in honor of President Jefferson. David Douglas subsequently used the name in his journals of 1825. Second highest peak in the Cascade Range, Mt. Jefferson rises above sea level to an elevation of 10,495 feet.
