Johnathon Carver, a military man and traveler is credited with being the first person to introduce the name "Oregon" to the world in his travel book: Travels Through the Interior Parts of America, published in 1778. Carver was born on this day in 1710 in New York State. In his work he reported of a Great river which rose far to the west and was called by the Indians in the region "The Oregon". Although Carter never sighted the river, his writing about it stimulated great interest in exploring Western America.
