Fort George Steamship On This Day In Oregon

The vessel, Beaver, was the first steamship to reach the Pacific Ocean. On this day in 1836, she steamed into Fort George, formerly Astoria, after a voyage of 163 days around the Horn from England where she was built in 1835.

On this run she used little steam and sailed mostly under canvas as a brig. After several years of service with the Hudson's Bay trading fleet, she was wrecked at the Vancouver Harbor entrance in July, 1881.
