The vessel, Beaver, was the first steamship to reach the Pacific Ocean. On this day in 1836, she steamed into Fort George, formerly Astoria, after a voyage of 163 days around the Horn from England where she was built in 1835. On this run she used little steam and sailed mostly under canvas as a brig. After several years of service with the Hudson's Bay trading fleet, she was wrecked at the Vancouver Harbor entrance in July, 1881.
