Morning Oregonian On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1861, daily mail service of seven days en route from Sacramento to Portland was established. The Morning Oregonian published the following item:

"While you are snugly ensconced in bed there are a dozen men driving as many four-horse teams on the road from Sacramento to Portland. In the dreary watches of the night they are coming and going, no mudholes damp their ardor; the turbulent rivers, as they do rush to the sea, do not bar their progress. The mail must come through--must come in seven days, rain or shine..."
