On this day in 1861, daily mail service of seven days en route from Sacramento to Portland was established. The Morning Oregonian published the following item: "While you are snugly ensconced in bed there are a dozen men driving as many four-horse teams on the road from Sacramento to Portland. In the dreary watches of the night they are coming and going, no mudholes damp their ardor; the turbulent rivers, as they do rush to the sea, do not bar their progress. The mail must come through--must come in seven days, rain or shine..."
