On this day in 1901 oil was struck on a farm near Troutdale. Newspapers reported "...it is not found, as yet, in paying quantities, but it is of such a nature as to justify hopes the deeper drilling will result in a discovery of commercial significance. The results have been so satisfactory that the company has been selling shares of stock at from $1.00 to $100.00 a share, and the public is watching matters with increasing interest."
