Because previous inter-city transportation was by water, the opening of country roads provided an occasion for the following personal comment by the editor of The Weekly Astorian on this day in 1879. "It looks good to see a wagon and team on the streets of Astoria from the country. Such scenes have never until the last few months been witnessed. Now Andrew Jackson Donaldson drives to the city occasionally with the air of a capitalist from Bergman and Berry's headquarters near Tongue Point."
