On this day in 1904, newspapers carried accounts of the flood raging in the Sumpter Valley and the lower Powder River country of eastern Oregon. For the previous ten days the sun had been shining brightly, rapidly melting the snow that had blanketed the highlands. "A considerable portion of the Sumpter Valley Railroad is under water between Sumpter and Baker City and it is feared that the loss of property and goods will be high when the flood reaches it's crest."
