On this day in 1856, Dr. William Holden Willson passed away. Dr. Willson arrived in Oregon on the brig Diana in 1837 and began practicing medicine and carpentry at the Willamette Missions. Born in New Hampshire, Dr. Willson had earlier followed the trades of cooper, whaler and ship carpenter. At Champoeg in 1843 he was chosen treasurer of the Provisional Government and three years later plotted and named Salem. A park tract he donated to the City of Salem still bears his name.
