During the 1890's a national army of hungry men calling itself "Coxey's Army" had a strong following on the Pacific Coast. On this day in 1894, an Oregon contingent, the "Fifth Regiment of the Industrial Army" consisting of 439 men assembled at Portland. After several days of drilling and encampment, the group began marching eastward. A railroad train was commandeered by the troops at Troutdale. Headed for Washington, DC, they got only as far as Arlington where U.S. calvary troops stopped the "Army" and sent them back to Portland.
