On this day in 1827 an entry in the diary of Peter Skene Ogden, an early explorer of the Oregon country, attested to the great numbers of beaver available to trappers. Ogden records that McKay had taken 735 beaver and other skins on two small streams discharging into the Cammettee (Klamath) River in about three weeks...which as Lewis McArthur in Oregon Geographic Names says, is one reason why we now have so many Beaver Creeks in Oregon and so few beaver.
