On this day in 1876, the Portland Cricket Club played their opening match of the season at their ground in south Portland. A scratch team captained by Mr. Gilman defeated another led by Mr. Creighton, by 58 runs to 56, four not out in the second innings. The bowling of Mr. Gilman was especially effective.
