On this day in 1813, Mrs. Jane Barnes, the first white woman to set foot on Oregon soil, arrived at Astoria aboard the Isaac Todd. She had been a barmaid in Portsmouth, England and accompanied Chief Factor Donald McTavish of the Northwest Company as his mistress. Mrs. Barnes was described as having fair complexion with flaxen hair and blue eyes - and with a manner like her figure - bold and engaging. Her arrival to Astoria was greeted with enthusiasm by the entire town.
