David Douglas On This Day In Oregon

"Reached the head of the Dalles...shortly before noon. This place deserves its name (Dalles de Morte) from a melancholy circumstance which occurred a few years ago to a party of men who were ascending as we are now. The had the misfortune to have their craft dashed to pieces...when by a supernatural exertion all escaped to shore...without food...without arms...stripped and 300 miles from any assistance...two agreed to make (an attempt)...to reach Spokane...which they did. (Of) the remaining six...all died except for one, who it is supposed, on good foundation, supported his dreadful existence on a forbidden fare."
