On this day in 1901, Oregon's first native-born Governor, Theodore Geer, received a letter from George H. Hines, Secretary of the Oregon Historical Society. The letter announced that preparations were under way for the unveiling of the monument at Champoeg on May 2nd. In addition to people arriving by boat from Salem, "a number of the more doughty" will make the journey to Champoeg from Aurora or Hubbard by bicycle, having first reached those points by rail.
