Exposition On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1904, ground-breaking ceremonies for the construction of the Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland were held. Twenty-three buildings were constructed-- 3 for U.S. government, 13 for the State of Oregon and 7 for the use of other states, including the world's largest log building.

Sixteen foreign countries and 17 states participated in the Exposition which formally opened June 1, 1905. It proved to be the first National Exposition in the United States to be financially successful, with over 3 million paid admissions to the grounds during the four and a half months it was open to the public.
