On this day in 1891, President Harrison's party crossed the state line and reached Ashland in the evening and was greeted by a cheering crowd of 2,000 persons. Guns were fired and the Ashland band struck up "Hail Columbia." A drizzling rain was falling and it was very sloppy and dark. Senator Simon, President of the Oregon Senate, delivered the address of welcome as Governor Pennover refused to leave the Capitol to greet the President.
