On this day in 1890 the world's record for the 50-yard low hurdles was broken when Portland's Forrest Smithson, the Olympic champion hurdler, ran a time of five and four-fifths seconds. As reported in The Oregonian, "This clever performer, a Portland boy born and reared, is out to win the American record for the 120 yard hurdles this summer. He already holds the world's record for 110 meters, which he made at London last July..."
