On this day in 1854 Charity Lamb killed her husband, becoming Oregon's first murderess. Brought to trial in September, she was convicted of the crime and committed to the State Penitentiary. Because Oregon had no penitentiary, she resided at the Portland City Jail until construction of a prison at Portland in 1856. With a sentence of hard labor for life, she was frequently seen doing the warden's laundry. After unsuccessfully trying to get a pardon, she was committed to an insane asylum at Portland in the 1860's.
