On this day in 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the Lewis and Clark Monument in City Park, Portland. The event was witnessed by thousands and heralded the approaching Lewis and Clark Exposition with much significance. Earlier in the year, the Oregon Legislature authorized an appropriation of $500,000 for the grand exposition.
