On this day in 1901 George Himes, Assistant Secretary of the Oregon Historical Society was in Astoria finalizing the Society's purchase of the site of Lewis and Clark's encampment, Fort Clatsop. "The Lewis and Clark site is to the West what Plymouth Rock is to New England," said Mr. Himes in the morning. "It is an historic spot and we shall see that the memory of the explorers is perpetuated."
