On this day in 1872, electric lights were turned on in Oregon for the first time when the new passenger steamer, The State of California, docked at Portland and illuminated the cabin and engine room with six arc lights. A public exhibition given that evening was said to have been attended by more that 500 Portlanders. "With the turning of a switch a brilliant white light burst forth surpassing anything of the kind ever seen in Portland before."
