On this day in 1850, the United States mail steamer Carolina arrived in Portland. She had departed from San Francisco six days earlier and brought with her a large mail packet. Her arrival was cheered throughout the territory, particularly the Willamette Valley, which is now only a week from San Francisco and will have mail delivery in 30-40 days from the east coast.
