On this day in 1865 one editor of the Morning Oregonian registered his frustration when he spoke of a 'neck-tie party' when he opined: "Just as we were going to press last night an alarm of fire brought out the entire department. It was a false alarm, such as are becoming too frequent in the city, and to break up which a well conducted hanging might prove efficient, upon investigation."
