On this day in 1906, Professor C.E. Bradley of the Chemistry Department at Oregon Agricultural College settled the question of the mysterious Nehalem substance by telling the Oregon Academy of Sciences at Portland that the more than three tons of waxy substance found in the sands of Nehalem Beach along Oregon's coast is "beeswax". Said Bradley, "Physically, chemically, and, in my opinion, indisputably, the substance found on Nehalem Beach is real beeswax and not a natural deposit." A legend of the Clatsop Indians claims the wax came from a Spanish ship wrecked on the Nehalem beach in 1769.
