On this day in 1929 Eastern Oregon Normal School in La Grande was opened. Located on 29 acres overlooking the city and the Grande Ronde Valley, it was the only higher educational institution in the state, located east of the Cascade Mountains. Eastern Oregon College of Education, as it was later to be named, was not the first institution of higher learning to be established at La Grande, however. The Blue Mountain University founded by the Methodist Church in 1875 was the earliest pioneer of education in the eastern half of the state.
