J.L. Nye On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1905, the toll road gate-keeper, Mr. J.L. Nye of Lower Soda on the Santiam Wagon Road spotted in the distance, a strange iron and tin contraption making all manner of noises. Nye could find no description of the thing on his toll sheet, so classified it as a "road-hog", and thereby charged it the usual rate of 3 cents.

The "hog" turned out to be one Dwight B. Huss and his automobile "Old Scout", the first automobile to cross the continent as it entered the Willamette Valley through the Santiam Pass east of Salem.
