On this day in 1966, the opening of Interstate 5 between Ashland and Yreka thus completed a route of travel that had been in existence, for white settlers, since 1858. For decades it was a toll road because Jackson County lacked the funds to buy and maintain it. Men on foot or horseback were charged 25 cents, wagons were slightly more, and the Oregon Stage Coach Line had to pay between 40 and 80 dollars a month to operate over the road. For years, the toll road was owned by Uncle Dud Dollarhide and his family. When the county decided to buy out "Uncle Dud" in the early 1900's, he refused and met the first construction crew on the Pacific Highway with a shotgun. After much negotiation, Uncle Dud finally agreed to accept $1000 for his road.
